One of our main concerns today is home energy usage. We won’t escape the fact that we need electricity to power our lives. Our level of civilization needs electricity to maintain it. Windmills were popularly used to mill grain before electricity was even available. Grinding grain took lots of effort and people before designed windmills to power their grinders. It was so effective that we used windmills as a good power source today. two. Solar energy – Some may think that his kind of alternative home energy is a twentieth century creativity. Indeed, converting solar power into electricity is an advanced technology, but this alternative sort of energy has been used since traditional times. However, there are also some setbacks in using this energy source. Although it is known to be natural, it is not found almost anywhere in the earth. Areas which are near the boundaries of the tectonic plates are where the good source of geothermal energy can be found. That result was the result of earlier days’ study. Today, however, studies have shown that the area source of geothermal power has widen and expanded. There has been many theories and assumptions that the earth’s supply of geothermal power is more than enough to supply our needs for even a hundred year. However, today, as everybody may have noticed, geothermal energy is still not our main source of power. So, what could be the reason for this? Actually, the energy from beneath the earth is never that easy to get. Although it may sound like a regular and normal drilling is all that we just need, several manpower and machineries are needed to ensure that the drilling will not cause any damage to the earth’s surface. Therefore, getting the natural energy from underneath is costly, that no investors would risk their money for it. So, how does the interior of the earth produce electricity? Technically, the heat inside the earth is something like six thousand degrees centigrade. That hotness would be more than enough to melt rocks. The extent of the use of the energy from underneath the earth depends largely on how hot it is. Basically, the energy is taken from the steam produced when water is being pumped inside. The hotter it is, the more steam is being produced. Geothermal energy is considered not only as a natural source of power, but it also falls under the renewable sources of energy category. It is considered renewable because once the hole has been made, the rain pours into it, reproducing the steam over again. In the early years, the steam being produced from geothermal power is only used for hot spas and hot springs. It has helped more the tourism industry more than any other industries. As years passed, however, the people have discovered more efficient and useful usage of the steam and the energy being produced. Is producing geothermal power then safe for the environment? While the answer may not be something that is very much acceptable, you may be relieved with the fact that as a part of the social responsibility of the suppliers and developers, they try to block the emission of harmful gases to the air, thus preventing any damage to the people’s health. Geothermal Heat Pumps are not limited to heating, they can also be use for cooling and in some cases they can even be used as water heaters. While we have been using Geothermal heat pumps since the late 1940s, according to the Climate Institute, “geothermal heating” has been used since the time of the Roman Empire as a way of heating buildings and spas by using sources of hot water and steam that exist near the Earth’s surface. How Do Geothermal Heat Pumps Work? While the temperature can vary widely from season to season, just a few feet below the earth’s surface the ground maintains a relatively constant temperature. This ground temperature can range from 45?F (7?C) to 75?F (21?C) depending on geographical location. A GHP uses this stable ground temperature to heat, cool, and when properly equipped, supply the house with hot water through a ground heat exchanger. Using the consistent temperature of ht earth as a heat exchange, instate of outside air with its variable conditions allows GHPS to reach fairly high efficiencies on the coldest nights. Geothermal Systems vs. Air-Source Systems While efficiencies vary by model, conditions and geographic location consider the following. According to the US Department of Energy (DOE): Geothermal Systems can reach 300 efficiency “on the coldest of winter nights” Air-Source Systems can reach 175 efficiency “on cool days” The improvement in energy efficiency offered by GHPs can reduce energy costs by 30-50% in comparison to traditional HVAC systems. In the United States, the DOE estimates about 40,000 geothermal heat pumps are installed each year. While this may seem like a large volume, it is only a drop in the bucket when your consider two-thirds of all homes in the United States are equipped with air conditioning. Why Isn’t Everyone Using a Geothermal Heat Pump? When compared to traditional HVAC systems, Geothermal Heat Pumps “can be several times that of an air-source system of the same heating and cooling capacity” states the DOE. How expensive are they? According to Michael Bluejay, “In 2006 a geo system cost about $2500 per ton of capacity to install. A 3-ton geo system at $7500 compares with $4000 for a traditional system, for a $3500 up-front premium for the geo system. Thanks to the energy efficiency of Geothermal Heat Pumps, this expense is returned to you in savings in as a little of 5-10 years. With an expected system lifespan of 25 years for components, and 50+ years for the ground loop, a Geothermal Heat Pump can provide energy savings for many years.
