10 Regular Products That Are More Environmental Friendly than Their So-called Green Counterparts

Share Today’s guest post: The global warming or climate change enthusiasts have created a huge focus on saving the planet by promoting environmentally friendly products . Savvy consumers should be careful not to fall for this marketing gimmick called greenwashing. Many of the products we already use are friendlier to the environment than their so-called green counterparts. Pay close attention to the products claiming to be eco-friendly or green because they may not be as green as they claim. Here are 10 regular products that are already more environmental friendly than their green alternatives. 1. Fuel efficient cars A gas powered car with good fuel efficiency is more likely to be better for the environment than a hybrid. People dont think about how the electricity is generated when they plug in their car. Most of the electricity in this country comes from coal generated plants, so plugging in your car doesnt really do much to save the environment. 2. Incandescent light bulbs The standard incandescent light bulbs use more energy, but their fluorescent counterparts are filled with mercury. Does anyone think about the potentially huge environmental hazard of improperly disposing of these mercury filled bulbs? People are just going to throw them in the trash with everything else and this will be a big problem when they quit selling the regular bulbs in 2012. 3. Cleaning products Many eco-friendly cleaning products that claim to be chlorine free contain a myriad of other toxic chemicals that are worse than chlorine. Check labels and be careful of percentages that are based on the number of ingredients rather than volume. The same old products youve always used are probably more environmentally friendly. 4. Water filter Using a water filter to make your own bottled water is much better for the environment. All the discarded plastic from bottled water is causing huge problems in garbage collection and landfills. 5. Clothesline Hanging your clothes out on a clothesline is much better than using the most energy efficient dryer you can buy. Using wind and solar power, your clothesline is not only eco-friendly, its free. Hang clothes inside during the cold winter months also adds needed humidity to the air. 6. Unscented detergent Many of the green cleaning products contain toxic chemicals that produce a fresh Scent. Since some of these chemicals can be carcinogenic, youre better off using unscented cleaning products. 7. Garbage bags Regular garbage bags are more eco-friendly than their biodegradable counterparts. When the so-called green bags decompose they emit methane into the atmosphere and they dont decompose any faster than regular plastic bags if theyre covered in the landfill and arent exposed to oxygen. 8. Paper bags The choice of using paper or plastic bags has gone back and forth as to which is friendlier to the environment. The thing to keep in mind is that paper is made from trees which are a renewable resource and plastic is made from petroleum which is not. Paper will always be a better choice. 9. Leather Eco-activists are against people using leather because it comes from animals. However, leather products are much more eco-friendly than their petroleum based counterparts. Less energy is used to make leather products and they will decompose when discarded. 10. Fur Some people get very upset when they see someone wearing fur. They dont realize that the cute little animals that the fur came from are varmints. If allowed to propagate unchecked mink, raccoons, rabbits, beaver and others would cause untold environmental damage. We all need to use common sense when it comes to protecting the environment . Try not to buy overly packaged products, recycle and use reusable products whenever possible plus be responsible when discarding your trash. We dont need to go overboard, but just be aware of marketing gimmicks and live sensibly. There is no way people can affect the global climate, but we can limit the amount of pollution we produce and trash that goes into landfills. Do the best you can and educate others to do the same. U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced that the Department of Energy finalized a $967 million loan guarantee to Agua Caliente Solar, LLC. The loan guarantee will support the construction of the Agua Caliente Solar project , a 290-megawatt photovoltaic solar generating facility in Yuma County, Arizona that will use thin film solar panels manufactured by First Solar, Inc. The project sponsor, NRG Solar LLC, estimates the photovoltaic generation facility will fund approximately 400 construction jobs and 10 full time operating jobs, and will be one of the largest plants of its kind in the world when completed. The Agua Caliente Solar project will bring hundreds of jobs to Arizona, while helping increase the reliability of renewable solar power, said Secretary Chu. “Todays announcement, in addition to several recent offers of conditional commitments for loan guarantees to solar manufacturing and generation projects, demonstrates the Administrations ongoing commitment to creating clean energy jobs while bringing innovative renewable energy technologies to the market.” The Agua Caliente Solar project will deploy fault ride-through and dynamic voltage regulation, innovative technologies that are new to photovoltaic solar power plants in the United States. These technologies will improve the reliability and predictability of the electricity supplied to the electricity grid. Pacific Gas & Electric Company will purchase power generated from the project and will deliver clean, renewable electricity to California consumers. The Department of Energys Loan Programs Office administers three separate programs: the Title XVII Section 1703 and Section 1705 loan guarantee programs, and the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing (ATVM) loan program. The loan guarantee programs support the deployment of commercial technologies along with innovative technologies that avoid, reduce, or sequester greenhouse gas emissions, while ATVM supports the development of advanced vehicle technologies. Including all three programs, DOE has issued loans, loan guarantees or offered conditional commitments for loan guarantees totaling over $40 billion to support 42 clean energy projects across the U.S. DOE has issued conditional commitments or loan guarantees to support numerous projects, including several of the worlds largest solar generation facilities, three geothermal projects, the worlds largest wind farm, and the nations first new nuclear power plant in three decades. Can Standalone Solar Energy Panels Be Superior To Solar Energy Panels Which Are Linked To The National Grid?

Share Even though many users of Solar Energy Panels might well want to take advantage of the financial benefits such as the feed-in tariff, they must have the site connected to the national grid so that they can transfer excess electricity made by the Solar Energy Panels set up. There might well be occasions where a site does not have a connection to the national grid, such as inaccessible areas, where the householder has to use oil or petrol driven generators for mains electric supply. But the householders might want to switch to Solar Energy Panels in order to save costs on fuel, which might be considerable in inaccessible areas. The Solar Energy Prices for fixing of the Solar Energy Panels can be about ?12,000 for a typical domestic site and the Solar Energy Prices, repaid by the feed-in tariff can be about ?500 to ?800 per year, and of course, any electricity that the Solar Energy Panels generate is free. Of course the independent Solar Energy Panels set up would not be able to supply the Solar Energy Prices benefits. In order to maximize the electricity made, a battery storage system is a must so that unused electricity can be stored for consumption when required, which would naturally, add to the Solar Energy Prices total. While the case for independent Solar Energy Panels in inaccessible areas might be probably worthwhile, for householders in areas served by the national grid, a Solar Energy Panels set up might well need to be rather large so that it can provide enough electricity to satisfy the needs of a household. Of course if the householder wanted to also add battery storage functionality, then this would add to the Solar Energy Prices to be paid. It would need a determined individual to go for a independent Solar Energy Panels set up in a case like this, where the Solar Energy Prices to be paid might well be much more in excess of the ?12,000, and with no feed-in tariff on offer to offset the Solar Energy Prices, it might well be a long time before any benefits were paid. Does The Fitting Of Solar Energy Panels Mean That The Home Owner Will Have To Alter Their Way Of Living?

It might well be the case that the fitting of Solar Energy Panels is the first step on a eco positive adventure for a home user, so surely this might well be a good point at which to mull over their life style. While it might not be necessary to go as far as full self-sufficiency, there might well be some areas worth looking at that can pay dividends, such as the electrical appliances that are in use around the house, or the condition of insulation in the loft and cavity walls and the condition of the window frames. After all the Solar Energy Prices for a typical Solar Energy Panels system is around the ?12,000 mark and so this sort of investment should not be taken lightly, in fact, preferably, it should be used as a building block for a more eco positive location. If the home user is not sure which electrical appliances are the greenest, then they might consult the Energy Saving Trust web site, which does efficiency tests on a range of domestic electrical appliances, to allow the home user to see what models are best and will allow them to save money on their electricity bills. It’s also important that the home user gets the best payback from the Solar Energy Prices they have paid by having their home insulation up to standard. Windows should also be checked for soundness and be draught free so that thermal losses are minimised. The Solar Energy Panels should generate some 40% of the typical house electricity demands and besides this there is a Feed-in Tariff available to eco positive energy generators that gets them a payment for each kW of electricity they generate and also, if they send any surplus electricity to the National Grid, then they get paid for that in addition. So the home user can get a reward for the Solar Energy Prices incurred when they had the Solar Energy Panels put in and if they make the best of their energy efficiency as well, then they ought to see better returns on the Solar Energy Prices. One of the most advantageous things about Solar Energy Panels is that they are easy to sustain, in that the rain might well wash off any dust that lands on them and it is really only where there are trees adjacent that the Solar Energy Panels might well get dirtied with bird droppings or tree sap, that will need to be washed off manually. There are essentially just two main kinds of solar panel. The simpler type which just generate Solar Energy in the form of hot water, and the higher technology type which harvest useful amounts of electricity. Both types of system can prove to be cost effective if they are effectively installed, and when one takes advantage of state grants which are presently available. Certainly, the photo-electric kinds of solar panel are more technologically advanced, more expensive and perhaps more useful, because you can use the electricity which they generate for many more uses, including the water heating task which is all that the old fashioned panels can perform. Water heating Solar Panels could reduce your gas and electricity consumption by providing all or part of your hot water and domestic heating requirements. Water heating solar panels supply hot water during the day, and this can easily be stored in most domestic hot water systems, which may used by family members when they come home in the evenings, and in the mornings. Of course, there are heat losses to be suffered in keeping the hot water from when it is generated (in daytime) until when it is needed (most often during the evenings and mornings). These losses can be quite serious, according to on the insulation of the system and time lag between when the water is warmed and when it’s. Photo-electric panels can additionally produce energy for this purpose, but also they can power your domestic appliances for example washing machines etc. On top of that, you can sell any electricity that you don’t consume to the national grid at an advantageous price. But bear in mind, you will always pay more for the energy which you buy, than for the electricity which you sell back to the grid. For this reason, the sophistication of photo-electric solar panels will be most efficiently harnessed by making one or two alterations to your daily routine. You can setyour household appliances to operate in daylight hours, because they will use free energy. You should also where possible attempt to carry out any other tasks demanding considerable electrical energy, so that you do them in daylight. By doing this, you will maximise your consumption of free energy, and minimise your consumption of bought in energy. There are in effect only two key sorts of solar panel. The older fashioned type which just produce Solar Energy in the form of hot water, and the more up to date kind which create useful amounts of electricity. Both technologies can be cost effective as long as they have been professionally installed, and when one takes advantage of state subsidies which are currently available. To be sure, the photovoltaic kinds of solar panel are more advanced, dearer and perhaps more useful, because you can use the electricity which they provide for a much wider range of tasks, in addition to the water heating function which is all that the old fashioned panels perform. So, water heating Solar Panels could cut your energy usage by producing all or some of your hot water and home’s heating requirements. Water heating solar panels generate hot water during daylight, and this can easily be stored in the majority of domestic hot water systems, which may used by family members when they come home in the evenings, and as they get up in the morning. These losses may be fairly serious, depending on the insulation of the system and time lag between when the water is warmed and when it’s. On the other hand, Photovoltaic panels will also supply energy for this purpose, but they can additionally run your household appliances such as washing machines etc. In addition, you sell any electricity that you don’t consume to the national grid at an advantageous price. Of course, you always pay a higher price for the electricity that you purchase, than for the electricity that you sell to the grid. You should be able to programme your household appliances to operate during the day, because they will use free electricity. You should also if possible try to do any other jobs requiring fair amounts of electrical energy, so that you do them during the day. In this way, you will maximise your consumption of free electricity, and minimise your usage of bought in electricity.
