The new stadium, which will replace 57-year-old Fouts Field, is designed by award-winning architects HKS Sports & Entertainment Group (www.hksinc.com), the firm that designed the new Dallas Cowboys stadium. The UNT System will be seeking LEED Gold or Platinum certification. If the project is awarded LEED Platinum, it will be the first of its type to achieve this rating in the country.

Rosemary Taylor asked: If you are living around the Mediterranean or in any country with wall to wall sunshine then why are you not taking advantage of the one thing you can count on, the SUN!!! In Spain, it seems that the majority of people still don’t take advantage of this very reliable resource and even more surprisingly is that the Spanish Government does not seem to have fully implemented new laws which now make it compulsory for developers to install systems offering, at least, the minimum amount of solar efficiency in all new homes. I am still seeing houses being constructed and completed without any kind of Solar System. This is curious because there are supposed to be Government grants available, so why is this still not being done. Why solar energy? If you leave the cost of installing any type of solar system aside for a minute and consider the environmental issues alone. We all know that humanity cannot continue with its present rate of energy consumption and something has to change. Well, it would be nice to think that the richer countries of the world who have warm climates would try to make substantial inroads for development of not only solar but wind powered energy also. Spain, for example is beginning to take the whole subject seriously and in certain areas of the country one can see whole banks of wind turbines doing their bit and with more planned and in the pipeline. But what does Spain have in abundance, you guessed it, sunshine and lots of it. So, solar energy should be given a much higher priority. If even a small percentage of the population switched to some form of solar system the energy saved could help to make a difference to the planet. Did you know that our electric ovens consume the highest amount of electricity, with your air conditioning following close behind. So, it makes sense for someone who is good with their hands and has a reasonable talent for putting things together to build a system and it shouldn’t cost the earth, no pun intended. Big advantages of solar energy If you are living on a property with a reasonable amount of land then it may be worth considering building your own complete system. If you have “handy man” abilities then it shouldn’t cost a fortune and if you design it so that it produces a surplus, you can sell the surplus back to the electricity company. If this was achieved on a regular basis then the initial cost of the installation would be quickly recouped and you would no longer receive bills. In fact, eventually, you may break even and you could even make a small profit. Indeed, larger commercial scale solar energy farms are being planned and installed by private individuals and solar energy companies, with the sole intention of supplying to the national grid for a profit. It’s possible to introduce a system even if you own a property with a very small garden because a solar energy panel system can be installed on your roof top designed to produce sufficient energy to provide all your hot water. Did you know that approximately 30% of your total energy consumption is used in providing you with hot water? Before you start, it would be an idea to find out what, if any, grants are available. In Spain, for example, it seems that grants are available but you will need to check because these may vary dependant on individual regions. You will need to pay for the initial installation solar cost upfront and then apply for your rebate but I believe in some cases the grants can be around 50% to70%. So, this has got to be worth looking into! Find out how much it would cost to either get professional solar contractors in to do the job for you or build a system yourself. If you look at the way energy prices have been shooting up through the roof recently all over the world then it may be the best thing you ever did. Plus if you ever want to sell your property in the future, what a fantastic selling point! You may be able to say to your prospective purchases “electricity bills what electricity bills” How good would that be? Differences in Geothermal Systems

Jack Foley asked: There are a wide range of geothermal system on the market today. There are also alot of different ways in which geothermal heat pumps are used to heat a project. Here are the most common ways geothermal systems are configured 1) The most common one in this country is using a geothermal heat pump with a buffer tank. Basically here with this system, the heat pump’s sole duty is to keep the water in the buffer tank to a set temperature. Usually between 30 and 40 degrees. From this the underfloor heating has a “store” on which it can obtain its hot water for heating the house. The main advantages is that you have a controlled system. The buffer tank is protecting the heat pump by acting as a heat dump every time the heat pump comes on. From this , you are protecting the life span of the compressor i:e, the heat pump will only come on when the buffer tank is not at the designated temperature and because it has to heat a big volume of water, it will take the heat pump some time to do this. The main disadvantages are 1) Fixed COP (Coefficient of Performance). Even on a mild day outside, the buffer tanks water temperature will still be at the same temperature. This is not required because on a mild day, there is less heat loss from the house, so your underfloor heating does not need the same water temperature in its pipes. Essentially you are paying for too much electricity. 2) The cost of putting in 2 cylinders is a disadvantage (Buffer tank & Domestic hot water cylinder). 3) Space required. You need a big utility room to insert all these items. It is pointless putting a heat pump in a garage off the house because you are going to loose some heat in transit. And because single phase heat pumps do not give big outputs, you want to get everything out of it that you possibly can. Here is a guide to wind energy in New York. Wind Energy – New York One of the places in the United States with the highest amount of energy consumption is New York. With the country’s largest city, New York City, being located here, and a large population of households – New York is constantly trying to find new and more economical ways to provide energy to the residents of the state. One new way that the state is trying to satisfy these energy needs is through wind energy, New York’s fastest growing way of producing electricity. The amount of wind energy New York produces is enough to rank it 15th among the states in the US. New York has the potential to output 7,080 kilowatt (KW) of energy yearly, which is quite a large amount – if you think of the fact that each KW is enough to energy about 300 homes. Currently, New York has commercial wind farms set up in eight areas of the state, with two more wind projects planned for the near future. The state is producing 280 KW per year right now, with 235 KW more being proposed in new projects. The oldest wind farm in New York is located in Madison County, which is in upstate New York. Opened in 2000, the Madison Wind area produces 11.5 KW of electricity per year, and this electricity is purchased on the open market, which means that consumers are getting some of their energy from this wind farm. This farm is home to seven wind turbines, which is a small amount compared to New York State’s largest wind farm. The largest wind project in the state is known as Maple Ridge Wind Farm, and it’s located in Tug Hill, a town in Lewis County, New York. The Maple Ridge Wind Farm is run by the companies PPM Atlantic Renewable and Horizon Wind Energy, and it houses 120 wind turbines. The wind farm was built over two years, 2005 and 2006, and it produces 198 MW of energy per year (that’s enough to run over 59,000 households). This wind is also consumed by average consumers in the state, and the Maple Ridge Wind Farm also has additions planned to the area, as well as one addition of 20 wind turbines that were added in 2006. As the wind energy New York develops grows, so do the number of people that benefit from cheaper, cleaner electricity. New York has also proposed having an off-shore wind farm, which would be unique for the area – and would add a lot of potential wind energy.
