Jane Oke asked: When we set out to learn how to make a electric car we weren’t sure how hard it would be. Today, after doing 3 complete conversions we are certain that anyone even the novice can build their own electric car. What do you need to start? ??First you need a place to work- garage, shop or even your laneway ??Simple tools that every home workshop has in it- wrenches, cordless drill, some power tools etc. ??Detailed plans on how to make a electric car We recommend that you start out by finding the right vehicle to convert into an electric car. Small cars and trucks are best. They are light and strong and small trucks have lots of room for battery placement. Our personal favorite is older Toyota small pickups or Ford Rangers; both are good trucks with proven electric car conversion success. You will next need deep cycle batteries (about 20) and a DC electric motor. We are thankful that the plans showed sources of free batteries and DC motors we could use for our electric car. That really helped keep the cost down of our conversion- a big part of the expense is in those two items. You should be able to do your own conversion for only a few hundred dollars- about the cost of one major repair. But the benefits are long lasting. Electric motors require very little maintenance for one thing. They just don’t break down that often. And of course you won’t have to put gas in your car anymore- a major benefit. Where do all those batteries go? We like to build custom boxes and put the batteries in the frame of the vehicle, but ready made battery boxes are available too. You can locate some batteries up front since the DC motor and controller don’t take up much space. You can usually put 6 or more up there. With a truck you can locate the batteries in the box if you want to. This does cut down on carrying capacity though. This is probably the biggest decision you will have to make- batteries vs. carrying capacity. Learning how to make a electric car is really about learning some new skills and applying them to new technology. It really isn’t difficult though. Your new electric car will be able to go 50 mph on the highway and have a range of up to 200 miles; and the acceleration… We were amazed at the stoplight to stoplight speed. This is not a slow moving electric golf cart here; this is a very quick machine. We just love driving by gas stations now. The first time you drive by a fill up station you will know why we are always smiling, you will be too. Did you know that gas prices are expected to rise to $7 per gallon by next year? For a long time, man has relied on the internal combustion engine for all his automobile needs. This engine which runs on gasoline principally has dominated the world of automobiles until recently. In these few years, the trend has begun to change. Now, people are looking for electric cars. The reason is simple – they want a cheaper way to drive. No more expensive gasoline. Some also want to have a cleaner car – one that produces less smoke. The electric car has all the parts of a regular gasoline car except one thing – it has no internal combustion engine. This means no gasoline. Instead of a gasoline engine, it rather has a motor that powers it to move. This motor is powered by asset of batteries. The batteries are powered by been arranged in a row and then their powers combined to produce enough current for the car to move. As the car moves the power is sued up. The batteries can be recharged after the car has made some miles. Unlike conventional vehicles, the battery will not have to be recharged so frequently. It may take the car up to about 1200 miles before it needs a recharge. For city driving, this may be about a week or two. Today, electric cars can make about 90 miles an hour; making them comparable to any mid sized sedan that you can find. With time, this speed will increase and the batteries will have a longer life. However, if you look closely, there are certain differences, apart from the reduced noise, which characterize the electric car. Given below are the features that will help you identify an electric car: 1. Instead of the gasoline engine, you will have an electric motor. 2. All the power is derived from a series of rechargeable batteries. 3. The controller, which gets the power from the batteries, gives power to the electric motor. These are certain features that help distinguish an electric car from a gasoline car. Thus, if you want to convert your car to electric, you need to keep these things in mind while you make the transformation. The first step, if you want to convert your car to electric, will be to remove the internal combustion engine and to put an electric motor in there. Apart from that, you have to add a bank of batteries that will help your car run on electricity. The overall cost, when you convert your car to electric, will be around $6000 for the parts and $1000 to $3000 for the batteries and the installation. Although it does look a tad expensive, imagine the benefits that you will get after the conversion. An electric car also requires lesser maintenance and the parts of your car are cleaner and better if it is electric. Another good thing is that electric cars will fetch you quite a sum when you sell them off. An old gasoline car does not have a good resale value but the electric car is way ahead in this aspect. Apart from the batteries, which you need to replace every three or four years, there is no other major expense involved in maintaining electric cars. For example, if it is a cloudy day and you are using some DIY tools which demand a lot of electricity. The battery bank is a passive supply of electricity, which has been previously charged up with any unused electricity generated over the past couple of days. Off-Grid Solar Power Generator If you live in part of the world where you have no direct electricity to your home then having a battery bank may prove very beneficial. And by having a battery back-up you will not have wasted any power you may have generated and not used.
