Ben Levanger asked: With what seems the whole world focusing on “energy”, wind has become increasingly popular among those looking to be energy efficient. Alternative energy has been trying to get tracking for years, and with the current global awareness at a all time high it is finally finding the footing its needed. There are many advantages to wind power, but with steep competition with the oil companies the benefits are almost always played down. So what are some advantages and disadvantages of wind energy. Advantages of wind energy Its renewable – the earth will never run out of wind, and in some cases wind speeds have been increasing over the years, making the case for wind energy even stronger. Also with the increased wind, existing wind factories will be producing at record rates. Wind energy is 100% clean, there is no harmful effect on the surrounding eco system. Wind turbines are someone expensive to build, but once they are installed and operational there is no negative effects. Wind energy is extremely basic – unlike nuclear power which is very complicated, wind energy is almost crude in design when compared to other complex power system. Costs – one the wind turbines are installed there are almost 0 costs, besides maintenance. There isn’t harmful waste generated like nuclear power, or Co2 released into the atmosphere like coal power. Are usually built on high mountain tops, in wind corridors out of residential development. The technology can be applied universally, and even home made windmills are becoming popular. Disadvantages of wind energy Wind “farms” take up massive amounts of land, because a large amounts of turbines are needed to supply sufficient power, the land needed to build these farms are excessive and would block future developments. They are an eye sore, because wind turbines are very large, and number in the hundreds once the farms are completed, they can “ruin” the landscape. Wind turbines are very loud – people living next to these wind farms have reported that the industrial turbines are very loud. Though there are many advantages and disadvantages of wind energy, there are no questions that something has to be done to improve our current energy crisis. Other solutions include, nuclear, clean coal, tide power, solar and many other options. One of the biggest problems is that you have so many different directions to take, and so many companies pulling for their own program getting a decisive action plan might be difficult. When people talk about what they hope to witness in the coming years free energy is often mentioned. However, although free energy might at first glance appear to be a thing of the future it already is here. It can easily be achieved with solar energy. As many home owners are coming to find out, there are far too many benefits of solar energy. By harnessing the powers of the sun, solar energy units are able to effectively generate power. The use of solar energy power provides many important advantages. Some of these are Reasons for Solar energy home Significant energy savings: Once you have your solar energy system installed, you will find that you are paying much less for your power needs. This as a result of the self sufficient system which powers and run a home solar system unit. Because solar panels are powered by the rays of the sun, you will also not have to bother about the issue of fuel. Cleaner energy source: When it comes to the advantages of solar energy power, its zero pollution levels is one of its most lauded qualities. Unlike most other sources which are found to negatively affect the environment, solar energy sources produce zero emissions. People with these units therefore do not have to worry about suffering from dangerous levels of pollution to themselves or the atmosphere. Effective location: Because solar unit panels are powered by the rays of the sun, finding a suitable location for them is easily accomplished. You can for instance choose to have your solar panels on the roof of your home where they will easily be provided with sunlight. The installation of a solar energy unit is done in various ways. A professional, for example, can be hired to provide installation services for some home owners. Other people opt to handle the installation themselves with the use of detailed DIY guides that provide careful instructions. One of the many criticisms of the employment of solar energy for home use is its initial high starting cost, however statistics show that this is more than accounted for with the almost free charge that the owner enjoys thereafter. Solar energy is the future of home power and energy. The only question is whether you will evolve with it or not. Visit us for information to Reduce energy costs today. The most common use for biomass pellets is as a form of heating fuel. Though biomass pellets are also used for animal bedding as well as cat litter. However, here at PelHeat we focus more on biomass pellet construction for heating solutions such as stoves as well as boilers. There are various questions to answer, including what are wood pellets, how are they constructed in addition to a summary of pellet heating. Firstly biomass is any form of works material which can be used as a alternative fuel source, this includes many materials, but more specifically it also includes biomass. Biomass, if burnt efficiently is an environmentally friendly energy. Wood is part of the current carbon cycle, as well as its combustion does not place additional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Fossil fuels on the other are forms of trapped carbon, from previous carbon cycles. With extracting as well as combustion fossil fuels we are placing additional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Learn more about Wood Pellets Heating The majority of biomass pellets produced for heating are manufactured from waste sawdust residue from timber processing. The sawdust plus shavings from timber processing are collected in addition to sold to pellet production companies. On the other hand, because of the increased demand for wood pellets, many timber processors have now set up their own biomass pellet plants next to their timber processing operations. There are a variety of other areas currently where large quantities of biomass waste are being utilized for wood pellet construction. For case in point the pine beetle in Canada has left thousands of dead pine tree’s. Operations are now starting to take advantage of this huge dead wood residue to produce pine pellets. Softwood pine pellets are the most common form of wood pellets heating. Generating wood pellets for heating requires some pretty heavy duty in addition to robust appliance. The core processes revolve around dropping the biomass to a small particle size, drying the biomass as well as then compressing the wood particles into pellets in the pellet mill. To make pellet the particle must be relatively dry, with a consistent moisture content. In the pellet mill, intensive forces of heat and pressure are applied to the particle to mould them into pellet form. The pellets shaped are strong, durable along with of high energy content. Read more about Wood Pellets Price The wood pellet stove market is a booming industry, which is set to grow continually over the next10 to 20 years. The reasons for this are the call for for low carbon along with alternative fuel sources. Solar and wind are promoted heavily as green energy solutions. On the other hand biomass is the only alternative fuel which can generate power on demand. Its far more proficient to make heat through burning wood, than it is to use electricity for warmth from solar or wind power. There are a wide assortment of pellet stoves along with boilers on the market today to meet any small or large scale heating demands for your abode or company. Wood pellet burners offer low maintenance plus high automation by way of speedy heat on demand. Pellet stoves along with boilers are restricted owing to your thermostat. If you are sincere for a life style change, you have to feel comfortable for that upcoming change in your mind. First and foremost is to say ‘No” to chemical oriented items from your day to day consumption. You can commence from recycling and taking a difficult decision while shopping at a grocery store. When you purchase a can of tinned tuna please turn your imagination to the living conditions of the wonderful mammal of the earth, the dolphins. Will it destroy the serine living conditions of that animal? Or else, when you browse through the cloth stand of the store can you visualize that those cotton fabrics may be the product of enormous farms which are draining out the synthetic waste to the nearby rivers. You may find the scenario not so pleasant. So the products which are produced with the least concern of atmosphere pose the vital and indeed the essential problems. It is evaluated that farming alone has significant contribution by draining out the waste containing chemicals to the rivers. We may not find anything apparently, but it is altering the eco systems. Those items are having the genetic ingredients which help for a quick spurt of growth but surely not sustainable. The algae of the river is consumed by it but due to its non sustainable behavior that will cause its death and the pile up starts in the water which is scientifically known as ‘algae bloom’. When these piles of dead algae increases, the area becomes dead zone. In other words it becomes the area in the water where there is no oxygen. This will cause the mass elimination of fish and other water animals. The result is altering of the eco system. The bleach is also causing similar damage to the atmosphere. They make short term gains but they do permanent damage to the rivers and earth and it will take years to reclaim. If you are determined for nature friendly alternatives, you will be contributing your part to lower the damage done to our earth. The Gulf of Mexico is a glaring example of dead zone and thankfully there is growing demand for nature friendly items. It is a gratifying scenario that a lot of companies are changing their out look in favor of nature friendly products thus to make a difference. Such companies are getting world wide acclaim and publicity which immediately increases their sale and demand. The spread of internet also plays its part, we can order for such products online and in the near future you may visualize to see that the Super Markets are showing enormous flex boards “Nature friendly goods only”. New studies say biofuels make greenhouse gases worse
February 8, 2008 by James

This post is brought to you by ? Curt Rosengren ~ Passion Catalyst TM ? ? “Love your work. Change your world.” Two new studies are giving biofuels a big fat thumbs down when it comes to their impact on greenhouse gases. This article gives a nutshell description of what the studies have to say: These studies, published in the prestigious journal Science, for the first time take a detailed, comprehensive look at the emissions effects of the huge amount of natural land that is being converted to cropland globally to support biofuels development. The destruction of natural ecosystems whether rain forest in the tropics or grasslands in South America not only releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere when they are burned and plowed, but also deprives the planet of natural sponges to absorb carbon emissions. Cropland also absorbs far less carbon than the rain forests or even scrubland that it replaces. Together the two studies offer sweeping conclusions: It does not matter if it is rain forest or scrubland that is cleared, the greenhouse-gas contribution is significant. More important, they discovered that, globally, the production of almost all biofuels resulted directly or indirectly, intentionally or not in new lands being cleared for food or fuel. “When you take this into account, most of the biofuel that people are using or planning to use would probably increase greenhouse gases substantially,” said Timothy Searchinger, lead author of one of the studies and a researcher in environment and economics at Princeton University. —
